Print & Apply CAB Systems
Print&apply cab systems are complete solutions for automatic in-line label printing and application, including HERMES, SQUIX machines with applicators, and specialized modules for specific applications such as tube labeling and more.
These solutions are part of the development of the area of auto ID, industrial automation and integration with WMS (warehouse system) class systems.
What are print & apply systems?
Print&apply systems combine an industrial label printer and an applicator so that the label is printed “on the fly” and immediately applied to the product, package or component in process.
In cab’s offering, this functionality is based on HERMES Q, Hermes C platforms and SQUIX printers working with dedicated applicators, as well as PX Q modules and AXON tube labeling systems.
These solutions are designed for continuous operation in automated production lines, where repeatability, high performance and integration with host systems are required.
CAB HERMES - the heart of integrated systems
HERMES Q is a family of systems designed specifically for automatic label printing and application in production lines. The devices are based on the motherboard of the current generation of cab label printers, with a powerful CPU, which enables fast processing of printing data and extensive communication with automation.
HERMES Q is the successor to the Hermes+ series and provides a platform to which different types of HQ applicators – roll-on, blow-on and tamp-on – are connected, tailored to the specific application and product geometry.
HERMES Q HQ applicators
HQ applicators are an extension of the proven HERMES applicators with additional features while being fully compatible with existing applications. Configuration is done directly from the printer panel, and parameters can be saved and recalled, speeding up changeovers between jobs.
The system provides extensive statistics and error messages, and continuous process control enables quick response to irregularities, which is crucial in 24/7 operation.
With different versions of application heads, labels can be applied from any side to flat, cylindrical, variable-height packages, as well as to the inside of profiles, pipes or on cables and hoses. Solutions are available for applying to standing packages, moving packages , with variable height, and even for a series of labels applied from different sides to packages in motion.
HERMES QL/QI - Linerless and InNo-Liner
Versions of HERMES QL for linerless materials and HERMES QI for InNo-Liner eliminate silicone backing, reducing waste and storage and transportation costs.
The 700m label rolls provide twice the capacity of the standard HERMES Q, which translates into less downtime for material changes. The HQ/HQI applicators for these versions extend the functionality of classic applicators while maintaining full design compatibility.
Hermes C - two-color GHS labels in one run
Hermes C is the world’s first system solution for printing and applying two-color labels in a single run. It was developed for GHS (Global Harmonized System) compliant labels, where red-framed warning pictograms are required along with black text.
With Hermes C’s dedicated applicators, real-time labeling of packaging and products from all sides is possible, with full readability and regulatory compliance. This solution specifically addresses the chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries, where the label is a critical element for user safety and the supply chain.
CAB SQUIX with applicators - flexible print&apply systems
SQUIXlabel printers are professional industrial devices that, when combined with applicators, create cost-effective print&apply systems for semi-automatic operation and vertical integration in production lines. The SQUIX is designed for easy operation, high reliability and a wide range of industrial applications.
SQUIX SQ 1000 applicator
SQUIX applicators are the successor to the proven S1000 series, maintaining compatibility with expanded functionality. The SQ 1000 is a development of the S1000 applicator and provides a solution for simple tamp-on applications in vertical orientation, either in semi-automatic mode (e.g., operator stations) or integrated into the line.
SQUIX SQ 3200 applicator
The SQ 3200, paired with a peel-off version of the SQUIX printer, is used for real-time automatic label application. The label is positioned at an angle of 45-95° with respect to the horizontal by a rotary cylinder, and then applied to the product by a short-stroke cylinder, allowing it to work with products of varying heights in limited space. The maximum stroke of the cylinder is 30 mm, and typical output reaches about 20 labels per minute.
With interchangeable tamp-on and blow-on pads and a wide range of formats (e.g., label heights from a few millimeters to several tens of millimeters), it is possible to mark both standing and moving products while maintaining stable application quality.
SQUIX SQ 3200 applicator
In addition to fully integrated lines, the combination of SQUIX with applicators makes it possible to build compact semi-automatic stations, such as for labeling trays, cartons or parts in small batch production. Such systems are a good entry point for plants that want to move from desktop printers and manual application to automated print&apply without a full line conversion.
Specialized systems: AXON, ROXI, PX Q
In addition to classic print&apply solutions, cab offers specialized systems for niche tasks that are difficult to handle with a standard applicator.
- AXON 1 – a system for fast and reliable identification of laboratory samples with vertical positioning of tubes/vials; once placed in the holder, they can be filled and sealed immediately.
- AXON 2 – equivalent to the horizontal position of test tubes, with automatic ejection of labeled samples, such as on a tray.
- ROXI – a head for precision insert-labeling of, among other things, films, membranes, seals and thermally conductive components; in the version with HERMES applicators, it can work in industrial applications with high accuracy requirements.
- IXOR / IXOR+ – servo-driven labeling heads for tape speeds up to 50 m/min, designed for installation in automated labeling machines.
- PX Q – a printing and decapping module designed for full automation, based on the current cab electronics platform, designed for use in applicators and OEM machines.
Advantages of print&apply cab systems for manufacturing
Cab systems are designed as an integrated component of the plant’s digital ecosystem.
The control panel is available in more than 30 languages, and the printers integrate a SOTI Connect interface for centralized device management and configuration. An extensive set of PNP/NPN inputs/outputs and the ability to update the applicators’ firmware directly from the printer make it easy to integrate with the PLC and quickly implement new features in existing installations.
With a wide range of platforms – from HERMES Q and Hermes C, to SQUIX with applicators, to AXON, ROXI, IXOR and PX Q modules – the cab covers most automatic labeling scenarios in industry, laboratories and logistics. The ability to work with linerless and InNo-Liner materials further supports sustainability goals by reducing waste and downtime associated with roll changes.
