Green Logistics or ESG in logistics – WMS system, dimensioning and automatic identification

ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) is definitely one of the most important concepts this year. In a nutshell, ESG is the concept of conducting business in accordance with environmental, social and corporate governance goals.

ECOVADIS silver medal - our carbon footprint in 2023 is only 1967 tons CO₂e

ESG assumptions will soon become mandatory for every business, which will be obliged to report progress in this area to the relevant institutions, according to the changing regulations. Preparations for these changes are worth starting today.

Our company began its adventure with ESG several years ago, staying ahead of the market and responding to customer expectations. Our activities have resulted in winning ECOVADIS silver medal – an organization that surveys companies around the world on their advancement in ESG goals. With this award , we were among the 17% most mature in the ESG area out of more than 130,000 organizations evaluated.

As part of this assessment, but also for our own purposes, we measured our organization’s carbon footprint. This data became the basis for setting reduction targets for the following years.

Achieving these reductions is accomplished through process changes that yield measurable environmental and business results. Our experience clearly shows that it is possible to combine environmental best practices with reductions in the cost of operating a business.

WMS and ecology in logistics

If you’re serious about achieving ESG goals in logistics, consider implementing a WMS warehouse management system. This tool comprehensively manages the processes of receiving, storing and shipping goods from the warehouse, while allowing integration with warehouse automation. The use of a WMS makes it possible to achieve the following benefits:

  • Better planning of storage space – allows you to fit more goods into a smaller warehouse, resulting in lower maintenance, heating and lighting costs.
  • Optimal inventory management – allows for precise scheduling of goods delivery, meeting customer expectations while avoiding overstocking.
  • Improving product data in the supply chain – influences better cooperation between the warehouse, transport company and couriers, which reduces costs and reduces the negative impact of deliveries on the environment.
  • Optimization of packaging – allows to adjust it to the actual dimensions of the products, reducing the amount of materials used.
  • The use of reusable pallets and containers reduces waste generation.
  • Reducing mistakes in picking and shipping means reducing the need for reordering, which reduces costs and saves time.
  • Accelerate task completion – reduces the amount of resources needed to handle logistics processes.

Master data - the power of volumetrics in logistics

Reducing the space needed for transportation, making better use of packaging and optimizing storage are all results that can be achieved with the right quality of master data in the supply chain.

Master data, or basic product information, includes, among other things, data on dimensions and weight. Automation of their collection is enabled by specialized Cubiscan measuring devices, with which you can:

  • Accurately collect volumetric data in manual or automatic mode (both at a standstill and in motion).
  • Adjust storage locations to the actual dimensions of the products.
  • Optimize loading at both the package and transport vehicle levels.
  • Increase customer service levels by reducing package sizes and eliminating “air shipping.”
  • Reduce waste in the supply chain.

Consider renting AUTO ID equipment

ESG is forcing a change in approach to automatic identification devices(barcode printers, readers, mobile terminals and tablets). An increasingly popular practice is their long-term rental.

Our company, responding to the needs of the market, has developed an information system to support the process of renting and using AUTO-ID equipment. It is also worth noting the possibility of extending the life of these devices through proper servicing, including preventive maintenance contracts.

Thanks to the philosophy of one-stop-shop, HKK Group provides comprehensive support services in this area, enabling you to use AUTO-ID equipment for many years.
