What are VDP labels?
In many processes, a label is no longer just a medium for static graphics, a product name, or basic information. Increasingly, it contains information that is unique to a specific item, batch, package, shipment, or promotional campaign. VDP labels—that is, labels printed using Variable Data Printing technology, with content that varies from label to label—are designed precisely for such applications.
VDP labels are self-adhesive labels on which selected elements vary within a single production run. The graphic design, logo, layout, and format remain constant, while the data—which is retrieved from a file, database, or the customer’s system—varies.
Each label can feature a different barcode, QR code, serial number, lot number, expiration date, product designation, location ID, address, language variant, or custom message. This allows a single set of labels to support multiple products, markets, sales channels, or logistics units.
What does variable-data label printing make possible?
VDP printing is particularly useful in situations where automatic identification, traceability, and fast data processing are important . Such labels can support manufacturing, warehouse logistics, e-commerce, retail, quality control, the production of arts and sports events, order fulfillment, shipping, and returns processing.
The most common applications include marking products with unique numbers, labels with barcodes or 2D codes, logistics labels, promotional labels, tickets and vouchers, serialization labels, production batch markings, identifiers for WMS systems, and labels used in product tracking processes. Variable content reduces the number of separate designs and speeds up the work of operators, data collectors, barcode scanners, and mobile terminals.
Modern production of small- and large-volume VDP labels
At HKK Group, we produce VDP labels at our self-adhesive label printing facility, using, among other things, a new Domino digital press.
These capabilities, available at only a few printing houses in the country, offer great flexibility for short- and medium-run print jobs, testing, customization, and quick turnaround. We can produce even very small print runs—including single test or prototype labels.
We plan to further expand our machinery with a special attachment for the flexographic press. This will allow us to combine several stages in a single material run, which will translate into increased efficiency and speed of order fulfillment.
Code Readability and Quality Control
With VDP labels, it is not only the ability to print variable data that is crucial, but also its legibility. Barcodes, QR codes, GS1 DataMatrix, or other data carriers must be printed correctly and be readable by a barcode scanner, mobile terminal, or automatic identification system.
